A time-line of past dCache releases and anticipated future dCache series (Large version).
dCache follows a two dimensional release system. Every couple of months we produce a feature release. Feature releases have version numbers 1.9.x-1, where x is a positive integer. Each feature release is followed up by a number of maintenance releases containing bug fixes or high priority feature tweaks. Maintenance releases for release 1.9.x-1 have version numbers 1.9.x-y, for y being an integer larger than 1.
As a rule of thumb, we provide maintenance releases for at least the recommended release and the latest release. We may provide additional maintenance releases if we see reason to do so.
At any point in time, dCache.org will recommend a particular release. Recommended releases are marked green below. Unless you have a reason not to do so, we urge you to use recommended releases on production systems.
Other releases are considered stable, however care should be taken as such releases have only received limitted amount of public testing or are outdated. Any change comes with a risk of introducing bugs. We urge all sites to carefully test each release with their setup before upgrading a production system.
If you use repackaged versions of dCache not provided by dcache.org, for instance from OSG, gLite or NDGF, then the provider may recommended a different version. In that case use the version recommended by the provider.
Non-pool nodes must belong to the same feature release, but may use different patch level releases. That is, version 1.9.x-y is compatible with 1.9.x-z. Pool nodes (which do not have any doors or other dCache services) belonging to different feature releases can be mixed to some extend. Please consult the compatibility matrix of the release notes for details.
We try to avoid configuration and schema changes in maintenance releases. Moving from one feature release to another may require configuration changes during upgrade. We provide a summary of such changes for all releases since 1.9.0 in the upgrade instructions.
The SRM client programs are available as a separate package. These packages provide support for interacting with dCache using the SRM interface. These tools may also be used with other storage systems that provide an SRM interface. The SRM client is released independently to the dCache server releases.

In addition to the usual improvements and bug fixes, dCache 1.9.9 focuses on cleaning the code base for authorization handling, adding support for several new xrootd requests, cleaning the code base for mover queue handling in pools.

1.9.8 further cleans up the configuration system, refines the WebDAV implementation, improves authorization in the xrootd door, improves configuration of FTP proxy behaviour, improves JMS based deployments, further simplifies first time deployments, and improves authorization of implicit space reservation.

The main focus area of this release is to let go of old baggage. The internal changes in dCache 1.9.7 are small, however many configuration files have change, libraries have been upgraded, and deprecated components have been removed. Please read the release notes carefully when upgrading: Simply installing the new RPM will not be enough.
Since configuration files have changed, the first chapters of the current version of the dCache book no longer apply to dCache 1.9.7. We will update the dCache book in the near future.

The 1.9.5 series of dCache releases will be supported for the duration of the 2009-2010 LHC run. In keeping with the other 1.9.n-series releases, no new features will be added to the 1.9.5-series of release, only bug-fixes. Versions of dCache with new features will still be available during the LHC run but as part of future major releases however these later releases will be supported for two major releases, in keeping with the current dCache support model.
