dCache - 1.9 release

The 1.9 release series

A time-line of past dCache releases and anticipated future dCache series (Large version).

dCache follows a two dimensional release system. Every couple of months we produce a feature release. Feature releases have version numbers 1.9.x-1, where x is a positive integer. Each feature release is followed up by a number of maintenance releases containing bug fixes or high priority feature tweaks. Maintenance releases for release 1.9.x-1 have version numbers 1.9.x-y, for y being an integer larger than 1.

As a rule of thumb, we provide maintenance releases for at least the recommended release and the latest release. We may provide additional maintenance releases if we see reason to do so.

Recommended Releases

At any point in time, dCache.org will recommend a particular release. Recommended releases are marked green below. Unless you have a reason not to do so, we urge you to use recommended releases on production systems.

Other releases are considered stable, however care should be taken as such releases have only received limitted amount of public testing or are outdated. Any change comes with a risk of introducing bugs. We urge all sites to carefully test each release with their setup before upgrading a production system.

If you use repackaged versions of dCache not provided by dcache.org, for instance from OSG, gLite or NDGF, then the provider may recommended a different version. In that case use the version recommended by the provider.

Upgrade instructions

Non-pool nodes must belong to the same feature release, but may use different patch level releases. That is, version 1.9.x-y is compatible with 1.9.x-z. Pool nodes (which do not have any doors or other dCache services) belonging to different feature releases can be mixed to some extend. Please consult the compatibility matrix of the release notes for details.

We try to avoid configuration and schema changes in maintenance releases. Moving from one feature release to another may require configuration changes during upgrade. We provide a summary of such changes for all releases since 1.9.0 in the upgrade instructions.

SRM Client Tools

The SRM client programs are available as a separate package. These packages provide support for interacting with dCache using the SRM interface. These tools may also be used with other storage systems that provide an SRM interface. The SRM client is released independently to the dCache server releases.

The 1.9.7 releases

The main focus area of this release is to let go of old baggage. The internal changes in dCache 1.9.7 are small, however many configuration files have change, libraries have been upgraded, and deprecated components have been removed. Please read the release notes carefully when upgrading: Simply installing the new RPM will not be enough.

Since configuration files have changed, the first chapters of the current version of the dCache book no longer apply to dCache 1.9.7. We will update the dCache book in the near future.

The 1.9.6 releases

The main focus areas of the 1.9.6 release are the addition of a WebDAV door, complete ACL support in the SRM, the ability to easily move cells between domains, and experimental Terracotta support in the SRM door.

The 1.9.5 releases

The 1.9.5 series of dCache releases will be supported for the duration of the 2009-2010 LHC run. In keeping with the other 1.9.n-series releases, no new features will be added to the 1.9.5-series of release, only bug-fixes. Versions of dCache with new features will still be available during the LHC run but as part of future major releases however these later releases will be supported for two major releases, in keeping with the current dCache support model.

This release is expected to be maintained throughout the first LHC data taking run.
The main focus areas of the 1.9.5 release are optimisations and polish ahead of LHC data taking.
And as usual, please make yourself familiar with the release notes.
In addition to the 1.9.5 release notes, make sure that you follow the instructions on how to configure the LinkGroupAuthorization file in the 1.9.2 notes as those instructions are now enforced more strictly.
Many thanks to our beta tests (NDGF), who exposed the following issues :

1.9.5-1 suffers from a dead lock in the SRM frontend on high load. The problem is fixed with 1.9.5-2
In 1.9.5-1/2 the Information Provider module stops after a short while of activity. The team is investigating.

The 1.9.4 releases

The main focus areas of the 1.9.4 release are access control for staging from tape, a more scalable xrootd redirector, and a few performance improvements in Chimera.

1.9.4-2 This version does not contain the leak found in 1.9.1-10, 1.9.2-9, and 1.9.4-1. The leak requires a manual cleanup procedure after upgrade. Consult the release notes for details about the procedure.
1.9.4-1 A leak was found in the SRM causing excessive memory usage. We recommend not to install this version on a production system.
1.9.4-1 The SRM door contains a security vulnerability. This is fixed in 1.9.4-2.

The 1.9.3 releases

dCache 1.9.3 is a feature release. The main focus areas of the 1.9.3 release are ACL support, NFS 4.1 support and asynchronous srmLs support. Other highlights include further refactoring of the pool code, first steps to refactor the pool manager, and support for using JMS for communication between dCache cells.

The 1.9.2 releases

With 1.9.2 up to and including patch 5 you may observe a degradation in the performance of the PnfsManager. This is fixed with 1.9.2-6.
Please make yourself familiar with the 1.9.2 release notes before installing this release.
We strongly discourage people from installing 1.9.2-3.
<= 1.9.2-8 The SRM door contains a security vulnerability. This is fixed in 1.9.2-9.
1.9.2-9 A leak was found in the SRM causing excessive memory usage. We recommend not to install this version of a production system.
1.9.2-10 This release contains two versions of the same library by mistake. This results in authentication failing when gPlazma is configured to use a SASL or XACLS interface, as with a GUMS server. We recommend not to install this version on a production system.

The 1.9.1 releases

1.9.1-10 A leak was found in the SRM causing excessive memory usage. We recommend not to install this version of a production system.
<= 1.9.1-9 The SRM door contains a security vulnerability. This is fixed in 1.9.1-10.
1.9.1-1 to 1.9.1-3: The pools do not work correctly with SrmSpaceManager: all files are accounted for with size 0.
1.9.1-2: In case of p2p, stage failures and some transfer failures, over allocation is freed twice and thus break pool accounting.
1.9.1-2: Migration module jobs move to the FINISHED state until the list of files to transfer has been generated. As a consequence, -target=pgroup and -target=link do not work.
1.9.1-2: When under load, the migration module may trigger a bounce loop in dCache.
1.9.1-2: Migration jobs may in some cases resurrect from the CANCELLING or SUSPENDED states.
<1.9.0-7: The replica manager does not work with 1.9.1 pools.
